Media Richness Theory in Practice

• The Barrier-Free Learning Project is an Open Educational Resource (OER) eBook developed to provide on-demand microlearning opportunities aligned with three key areas of need:

  • Understanding Neurodiversity 

  • Universal Design for Learning and Mindful Teaching

  • Teaching and Using Canvas

• These areas correspond to the Accessibility Project map and contribute to the overall professional learning strategy for accessibility at the college.​

Objectives:

• Empower faculty with accessibility knowledge to enhance their courses.- 

• Align learning opportunities with the concepts of Media Richness Theory, ensuring that we reach students where they are and match the media to their level of engagement.  - 

• Create a long-lasting OER resource that can be remixed and repurposed, supporting both leaders and users.

Learning Structure:

• One-page infographics aligned with specific topics, designed to be understood and implemented in less than 10 minutes.

• An entirely digitally accessible document that complies with WCAG 2.2 AA standards.

• An OER eBook designed to support all levels of the college.

Implementation:

• Weekly announcements on Canvas and SharePoint, which faculty members look for and expect (there have been almost two years of posts).- 

• Content developed in response to feedback and the needs of the college and faculty.- 

• Launched in January 2025, featuring over 60 pages of content.

Success Metrics:

• View metrics on Basecamp; we regularly receive over 100 views.

• - A mid-project survey revealed that more than 50% of viewers share the Barrier-Free Learning Project with others.- 

• ​Testimonials and support for the overall professional learning strategy.- Writing 
• the eBook was a fun experience for the authors!
